Lenovo IdeaPad Y560P Battery

While most people assume all video players are created equal, they’re not. Your choice can cut or add hours to playback time. To find out what gives you the best possible battery life, I grabbed six popular free video players and put them through the wringer. The players in my shootout include VLC, MediaPlayer Classic HC, KMPlayer, PotPlayer and Windows 10’s built-in Movies & TV player. And just because Apple used to push it on everyone, I also tested QuickTime 7.

Most of these free media players make the majority of "best” or "top” lists I’ve seen. I also elected to exclude paid players, as few shell out for them since the optical drive died on laptops. You can jump to the benchmark chart at the bottom of this article if you just want to see which software won, but first let me explain my testing method.

For my testing platform, I picked Toshiba’s new Radius 12 running Windows 10. The laptop gave me Intel’s latest Skylake CPU, a moderately sized battery, and, with its 4K panel, the low end of run time. I actually wanted a laptop with a modest battery life rather than, say, Microsoft’s Surface Book, which can take half a day to zero. Even if another laptop has a larger battery, or a smaller screen, however, I believe the results should scale.

I know from the excellent testing that Techspot.com’s Tim Schiesser ran two years ago that lower resolution and lower bit rate increases battery life. For my test, I wanted to keep the video expectations very high, so I used the same 6GB UltraHD 4K Tears of Steel video (open-source) that I used in my MacBook Pro 13 vs. Surface Book shootout. It’s a 74.4Mbps .MOV file with a resolution of 3840x1714, encoded in H.264 using the high 5.1 profile.

The screen was set at a relatively bright 260 nits (as close as I could get to 250) and the audio was on. I even used the same Samsung earbuds as I did with the MacBook Pro 13 vs. Surface Book shootout. All of the testing was done on Windows 10 before the TH2 patch was released, and in airplane mode. Besides manually setting the screen brightness, all of the testing was also done with the default power settings for the OS.Battery life was measured using an external, self-powered USB probe that logged when power was supplied to the USB port. Each run drained the battery until the laptop could no longer be powered on.

What’s more, the Surface does not come cheap, starting at Dh3,395 and rising to Dh8,395 for a fully souped-up version, making it a more expensive proposition than a high-end laptop. And that’s before paying Dh520 for the Type Cover, with the optional Surface Pen and docking station an extra Dh255 and Dh810 respectively. And while working on the Surface is fine on a table or desk, typing on the keyboard on your lap is, as with all such two-in-one tablets, a precarious business, better suited to a, well, laptop.

But if you’re a mobile professional embedded in the Windows ecosystem with cash to spend, the Surface Pro 4 is the best laptop replacement going, and offers a serious alternative to the Macbook Air.Indeed it has. Windows tablets, driven by Surface devices, are the fastest-growing segment of the tablet market according to industry analysts Strategy Analytics. Shipments grew by 59 per cent during 2015, even as the overall market for tablets declines. Perhaps the greatest sign of the Surface’s success is its impact on Apple. But in September, it launched the iPad Pro, which its chief executive, Tim Cook, claims has now replaced his laptop.

I like my Macbook Air because it’s light. How does the Surface compare?Pretty favourably. The tablet itself weighs about 786g, with an extra 310g from the Type Cover. Combined that’s just 1.1kg, about the same as the 11-inch Macbook Air but more than 250g lighter than the 13-inch versions.

The Surface Pro 4 wins out if you’re looking for a work device, given the Type Cover’s superior keyboard and its trackpad. The iPad Pro is the better device for media consumption, which, to be fair, isn’t really the Surface Pro 4’s main selling point. Despite falling a little short on pixel density (264ppi versus the Surface’s 267) the iPad Pro has a larger screen (with a movie-friendly 4:3 aspect ratio), better battery life and, crucially, far superior speaker sound. If you own a Chromebook, you may have noticed its annoying tendency to slip into sleep mode at the blink of an eye. In fact, it can be hard to keep Chromebooks from entering sleep mode. Not only do most Chromebooks have a feature that switches on Chrome OS sleep mode when you shut the laptop lid, but the operating system also includes a failsafe that forces that laptop to hibernate after around six minutes if no action is being taken.

battery boost lptAnother key enhancement is Battery Boost, a power-consumption profile that regulates the performance of your GPU while maintaining a smooth 30 frames per second. Nvidia claims that Battery Boost will last twice as long as your laptop's usual battery life. The feature is automatic, kicking in the moment the rig is unplugged. As with Game Optimization, you have the option to toggle the settings, just in case you want to notch frame rates higher than the default cap.
Gamers that own a gaming desktop can also take advantage of the LED Visualizer, which lets you control the brightness and lighting effects on your graphics cards. It’s a fun piece of software that helps add some individuality to your rig’s presentation.

GeForce Experience currently supports more than 300 games, including XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Fallout 4, and Batman: Arkham Knight. Nvidia is constantly adding new titles to the list, ensuring that newer titles, such as Rise of the Tomb Raider, will run smoothly.

What is ShadowPlay?
Admit it: Everyone likes to show off now and then. For those moments you feel like basking in the spotlight, Nvidia has added its game-capture software, dubbed ShadowPlay. The software can capture up to 20 minutes of video at 3840 x 2160 in Shadow Mode, which is several minutes longer than the PlayStation 4's video capture functionality (15 minutes). You can, however, record for an unlimited amount of time by switching over to Manual Mode, which lets you turn it on and off as needed. There's also Combined Mode, which allows you to use both functions simultaneously so you can stream out that awesome move and save it for your own personal gloat collection.
But why make your fans wait to see your sweet moves? ShadowPlay can also stream directly to Twitch with the flick of a button. When you're ready to record, you just hit the assigned hot key, and the software does its thing in the background — hence the name ShadowPlay.

What is GameStream?
Sometimes, you'll want to play your PC games on your living room couch instead of posting up in your room for hours on end. Thanks to the GameStream feature, you can indulge your inner couch potato without dragging your whole rig into the living room. As the name suggests, GameStream allows gamers to stream their PC titles from their notebooks or desktops to either an Nvidia Shield TV, Shield tablet or Shield portable over a local network. There are currently more than 200 titles optimized for GameStream, including AAA games like Far Cry 4, Resident Evil 6, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Assassin's Creed Syndicate.
There are some hardware requirements to keep in mind. Laptops need to have at least a GeForce GTX 700M GPU, while desktops need a minimum of a GeForce GTX 600. The lowest entry point for processors is either a 3.1-GHz Intel Core i3-2100 or a 2.8-GHz AMD Athlon II X4 630 with at least 4GB of RAM and Windows 7. You'll also need a router, and while Nvidia recommends an 802.11n 5-GHz router, you can get away with an 802.11a/g device.

Streaming to either Shield device offers two modes of play. There's Console Mode, which allows you to pair wireless controllers with your Shield device and play just as you would on a traditional console. Keyboard and Mouse support allows you to play PC-style, which should come in handy for all of your MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) and RTS (real-time strategy) games.
Both modes stream your games in 1080p at 60 fps. However, Shield TV can play your favorite titles in 4K at 60 fps with 5.1 surround sound, provided that you have the appropriate television and are signed up for GeForce Experience Beta.

Does it come with G-Sync?
G-Sync is a separate program from GeForce Experience. So, while it's possible for a laptop or desktop to have Experience, unless the laptop or monitor is G-Sync-enabled, you can't use the frame-rate-smoothing technology.game optimization lptUnfortunately, users with G-Sync laptops or monitors are currently being forced to root around in the regular Nvidia control panel to enable the technology. Hopefully, the company will integrate this important feature into the Experience suite as a one-off offering or fold it into the Game Optimization app.

What's GeForce Experience Beta?
If you're an early adopter, we recommend joining Nvidia's GeForce Experience Beta program. The early-access program will give participating gamers a first pass on upcoming features, including 4K GameStream and Twitch Ingest Server, which lets you select your server to obtain optimal broadcasting speeds. Joining is as simple as checking off the GeForce Experience and GeForce Driver boxes in the Preferences menu.

Dell claims the XPS 13 display achieves brightness levels of 400 nits, which is slightly above the 370 nits maximum brightness I recorded from the QHD+ model. This brightness output can be lower if the display is not showing predominantly white content, presumably to improve black level performance, but I didn’t have any issues viewing this panel in bright conditions due to the panel’s slim, gap-free construction.
Color accuracy was acceptable, achieving an average dE2000 of 3.81 in saturation sweeps, 4.36 in greyscale, and 4.09 in our custom accuracy test (anything below 2.0 is indistinguishable from perfect). Accuracy was mostly let down by a default panel temperature of around 7,500K, which is on the cool side, as well as slightly inaccurate reds and blues, however this shouldn’t be a big issue for most users. Dell claims sRGB gamut coverage, and I was able to validate that in my testing.
