In the vast majority of cases, a device such as a tablet or laptop is assigned a new IP address each time that it connects to the internet. Currently, ISPs are under no obligation to retain details of which device is assigned to each IP address, potentially hampering anti-terrorism and other criminal investigations. The new legislation will see ISPs forced to retain that information for a year.
The home secretary, Theresa May, says the proposed legislation won't allow the security services to fully identify all suspects - linking the IP address merely reveals which connection was used, not which individual was using it. To be able to fully identify individuals, the security services would also need access to the communications data, which was proposed in the Communications Data Bill (the so-called "Snooper's Charter") that was rejected by parliament earlier this year. "This is a step forward, but it is not all the way," Theresa May told the Andrew Marr show. "Even with these IP addresses being within the legislation, it will still be the case that the National Crime Agency, CEOP and others will still not be able to identify everybody who's accessing illegal content on the internet."The Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) says the new legislation will only catch minor offenders, and not terrorists who already cover their tracks. "The devil will be in the detail but it's going to be difficult no matter how they do it," ISPA chariman Jane Massey told the BBC.

"It looks like it could catch people who post annoying things on Twitter or not very nice things on social media - but not those who know how to hide their online activities. It's not a sensible thing to have decided to do without consulting us first."Massey warned the requirement to retain such data would cost "tens, if not hundreds, of millions", a cost that will be borne by the public one way or the other - either through increased bills if the ISPs are forced to bear the cost, or indirectly through taxation if the government foots the bill. Unlike the Communications Data Bill, the new legislation has the backing of the Liberal Democrats, which means that it's likely to have a safe passage through parliament. The Advertising Standards Authority has rebuked a website selling laptop batteries for giving the impression it operates from the UK, even though it appears to be run from China. The website in question, www.uk-battery-shop.co.uk, uses more than its web address to imply that it's being run from the UK.According to the ASA's adjudication, the website's About Us page stated that "all queries or issues can be answered online or by our specialist team of UK-based advisors", and makes repeated reference to items being delivered by Royal Mail.
However, a customer who complained to the ASA said he believed the company was operating from China. The company, perhaps unsurprisingly, failed to respond to the ASA's enquiries, but was nonetheless found guilty of breaching the advertising code."We considered that in addition to the lack of any information that the company was based in China, various aspects of the website, including its references to the Royal Mail, the reference to 'UK based advisors', the listing of prices in pounds sterling, the short delivery times stated on the website, and the website URL www.UK-battery-shop.co.uk, implied that the company was a UK-based company," the ASA ruled."Because we understood that the company was based in China, we concluded the ad breached the Code."
The ASA told the website to "ensure its advertising did not misleadingly imply that the company was based in the UK, and that it made clear its identity and geographical address".However, given that the ASA has no jurisdiction in China, nor even the power to impose any meaningful punishment on British advertisers for that matter, it's hard to imagine its demands will carry much weight.Going strong since 2005, Mozy is one of the longest-running cloud backup providers. Security is tight: files are encrypted prior to backup using the default Blowfish 448, or you can manage this yourself using AES-256 encryption. The MozyPro web portal gave us full access to our account, so the first job was to create client configurations. These define what features are available to users, and how the client software behaves. It also automatically secures the base file set for Windows and Mac systems, and much more besides. We set backups to run if a client’s usage was idle for a specific amount of time, limited Mozy’s CPU usage, and configured how often throughout each day it could run. We assigned daily and weekly schedules – with bandwidth restrictions applied during work hours – and let some users run their own backups. As users are created, an email is issued with a download link for the client software. After the user enters their email address and password, the client registers with the main portal and starts backing up using the assigned profile – it’s that simple.
The client sits in the system tray and provides a running tally on backup activities. More control is available via the Settings option, where authorised users can modify backup sets, use the File System tab to add more files, tweak their backup schedules, and enable bandwidth restrictions.MozyPro used Microsoft’s VSS to secure our Exchange 2013 and SQL Server 2014 apps. With VSS support enabled in our server profile, all we had to do was select which databases we wanted copied from the local client. The 2xProtect feature must be configured at the client end, since it isn’t referenced in the profiles. Data is stored natively, so we could use drag-and-drop restores from Windows Explorer, which proved to be speedy; a 690MB video clip recovery averaged 53MB/sec.MozyPro first runs a full backup and then updates any changes in subsequent jobs. For large datasets, you can order a Data Shuttle removable device and courier this to Mozy for vault seeding, with 3.6TB for one server costing an extra £250.
For Exchange and SQL Server recovery, the VSS backup files are downloaded from the cloud. For this, you can use the 2xProtect local backup, but only if you want to restore the latest version. Item-level recovery isn’t supported, so you’re better off using Exchange 2013’s own, rather good, item-recovery features. The myriad restore options make MozyPro a top choice if you want to let your users in on the act. For file restoration, we could use the Client Restore window, view our files from the Windows Explorer MozyPro Virtual Drive icon, access the context menu restore option or log in to the MozyPro web portal and restore all files with one click. You can monitor cloud usage and view historical graphs of backup activity from the admin web portal. Selecting individual systems revealed detailed audits of all backup jobs, showing the number of files and megabytes transferred.http://www.batteries-pc.com/hp.html
