Dell vostro v131r Battery

In many ways, a 13-inch laptop is the perfect size for a portable PC; they're not as fiddly and squint-inducing as netbooks, but not as heavy and awkward as a full-on notebook. For a broader view, look at our best laptops in the world today. But whatever you do, read on to find our favourite 13-inchers of the past few months in no particular order. Fortunately for us, the XPS 13 isn't all beauty and no brains. This laptop features the horsepower to make work and play enjoyable, and it has just enough battery life to never leave you in a lurch. Regardless of whether you choose to upgrade to the touchscreen quad HD+ version, or if you stand pat with the full HD model, the Dell XPS 13 will provide you with a delightful experience for years to come.

Though it may not have the 12-inch MacBook's slick design, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina features Apple's Force Touch Trackpad that uses different levels of sensitivity instead of mechanical buttons to make clicks. Solid Apple build quality, a great display and decent levels of performance across the board make the new MacBook Pro with Retina one of the safest bets on a 13-inch laptop today. Though it's failed to make a dent in the laptop space with much more than its Tab Pro S convertible, Samsung's follow-up to the 2012 Series 9 notebook boasts not only capable specs, but a competitive price as well. Marketed as an Ultrabook, it's certainly disheartening to know the battery life lasts only five hours, but given its sleek and sexy design, it almost doesn't matter. What's more, with the Samsung Notebook 9, you won't have to deal with bloatware made infamous by many of the other Microsoft OEMs.

Vibrant, glare-free screen Excellent keyboard and trackpad Weak sauce graphics Tinny speakers
The ZenBook UX305 is a well-built, fully metal machine that's thin, light and attractive. Now available with Intel's full-fat Core i-series processors in addition to the usual Core M chips, the UX305's astonishing value makes it hard to ignore. Updated with a gorgeous QHD+ display, it stands out as a shining example of a computer that offers power and portability in a small package that doesn't break the bank.

In a market densely populated with slim-line laptops from a massive range of manufacturers, Apple's MacBook Air fights on admirably - though it started showing its age on the outside a long time ago. It has Intel's fifth-generation Core-series processors rather than the newest Skylake variants, but it's still a capable machine; even more so since Apple made 8GB of RAM standard across the line. If you don't like the look of its lowly 1,440 x 900 pixel-resolution display, there's always the 12-inch MacBook - and new MacBook Air models are expected to launch this summer. In many ways, a 13-inch laptop is the perfect size for a portable PC; they're not as fiddly and squint-inducing as netbooks, but not as heavy and awkward as a full-on notebook.

Lenovo has got together with a trio of other tech companies to bring fingerprint authentication based on FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) standards to its laptops such as the Yoga convertible range. As mentioned, the PC vendor is teaming up with three other firms: Synaptics for its Natural ID fingerprint sensor, Intel due to the integrated security features of its latest Kaby Lake CPUs, along with PayPal and its 'unique' authentication systems.

The upshot being that you'll be able to authenticate PayPal purchases, or any other online FIDO-enabled services, with a simple fingerprint rather than having to bother with entering (or indeed remembering) passwords. If you have a Lenovo laptop with the requisite hardware, that is, with the first device set to benefit from this innovation being the Yoga 910.The collaborating tech firms stress the high level of security that this new system brings, with three layers of protection to guard against any possible compromise – the Natural ID sensor itself, Intel's built-in hardware security, along with the FIDO-compliant authentication. The user's fingerprint details and FIDO credentials never leave the laptop, and are stored in hardware and encrypted on the machine.

Brett McDowell, executive director of FIDO, commented: "Passwords are a universal problem that is not limited to mobile devices. Every internet connected device needs the ability to upgrade to simpler, stronger FIDO authentication and thanks to this partnership, the desktop ecosystem is on an accelerated path to get the same FIDO capabilities already well-established across the mobile ecosystem."Lenovo's Yoga machines are a well-regarded range of convertibles, although last week they were the source of some controversy with the company being accused of 'locking' the hybrids to Windows 10 due to some manner of agreement with Microsoft – allegations that the PC manufacturer strongly denied.

The Anniversary Update is an impressive piece of work that ensures Windows 10 is on track to replace Windows 7. It's reliable, easy to use and keeps getting better – although there's still room for more significant improvements.HP has refreshed its ProBook 400 range of laptops aimed at small businesses, with the new G4 models being built around Intel's Kaby Lake processors, offering some very impressive levels of battery longevity.HP notes that while features are obviously paramount when it comes to a business notebook, style – and thus appeal to staff members – should not be neglected. And to that end, the ProBook 400 boasts a new thinner slim-line 'wedge' design, and a tasty-looking 'asteroid silver' colour scheme and finish which doesn't show up any smudges or fingerprints.

In terms of the specs, the new machines include the ProBook 430 (13.3-inch display), 440 (14-inch), 450, 455 (both 15.6-inch) and the top-end ProBook 470 (17.3-inch). They all run with Intel's Kaby Lake CPUs in Core i3, i5 or i7 flavours, except for the ProBook 455 which instead goes for a choice of AMD APUs (AMD A6-9210, A9-9410 or A10-9600P).And all offer an anti-glare LED-backlit display with a resolution of up to full HD (1920 x 1080), and optional touchscreen save for the 455 and 470 – although if you go for the touchscreen route, you'll get a display resolution of 1366 x 768, not full HD.

The ProBook 430 comes with just integrated graphics, but with the other models there's the option of a discrete GeForce 930 MX with 2GB of video RAM on board. You get USB Type-C ports with these machines as well, and a larger clickpad than the previous generation, along with security features including TPM 2.0, HP BIOSphere and an optional fingerprint sensor. These laptops have passed MIL-STD 810G testing, too. There's a choice of Windows 10 Pro or Home for the operating system, and HP has made big improvements on the battery life front, with gains of around 40% to 55% on these various models compared to their predecessors. HP notes that you'll now get up to 16 hours of battery longevity when on the go.

A few companies, continue to roll out business laptops, which cannily offer the best of both worlds: traditional portable PC features with the tablet's touch functions added. The Dell Latitude 14 model 3450, part of the 3000 series of 14-inch laptops is a good example. The configuration I tried out is fueled by a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i5 chip with 8GB of DDR3 RAM and 500GB of hard disk. It runs a 64-bit professional version of Windows 8.1 and by end July it can be upgraded for free to the upcoming Windows 10. This is reassuring for die-hard fans of the look-n-feel of Windows 7 and earlier, because Windows 10 is a case of Back to the Future: with the option of switching any time between the tiled Windows 8 look and the classic Windows desktop of old.
